Susan Collins opposes Trump's pick to the D.C. Circuit

Sen. Susan Collins is opposing President Donald Trumps nominee to the second most powerful court in the country.
In a statement, the Maine Republican cited comments Justin Walker made at his investiture as a district judge, in which he addressed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaughs critics. In his remarks, Walker vowed to not surrender while you wage war on our work. Walker clerked for Kavanaugh when the justice was on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C Circuit.
While Judge Walker is entitled to hold whatever personal views he chooses, his ideological comments on the very day he was formally installed as a federal judge
prevent me from supporting his elevation to the second highest court in the land, Collins said.
Walker cleared a key procedural vote Wednesday to become a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C Circuit. Collins was the only Republican to join Democrats in opposing Walker.

*Reuters really is the best! I checked around to see if another news site had more on the story than Reuters. The NY Times, National Post, USA Today and Bloomberg had it, but all of them were quoting the original Reuters story verbatim. The ol' London outfit had beaten everyone to the punch!

India says soldiers killed on disputed Himalayan border with China
Tue 16 Jun 2020 05.42 EDT
Three members of Indias armed forces have been killed in a violent face-off with Chinese soldiers on their disputed Himalayan border, the Indian army has said in a statement.
The deaths are the first loss of life in the border area in at least 45 years, and come amid a renewed dispute between the two countries in recent weeks. Indian and Chinese soldiers, who often do not carry weapons in the area to avoid escalating conflicts, have brawled, detained each other and deployed forces and equipment in the western Himalayas in recent weeks.
During the de-escalation process under way in the Galwan Valley, a violent face-off took place yesterday [Monday] night with casualties on both sides, the Indian army said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon Delhi-time. The loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers.

Deadly heat is killing Americans: A decade of inaction on climate puts lives at risk
Dean Russell, Elisabeth Gawthrop, Veronica Penney, Ali Raj and Bridget Hickey, Columbia Journalism InvestigationsTue 16 Jun 2020 02.00 EDT
Yearly heat-related deaths have more than doubled in Arizona in the last decade to 283. Across the country, heat caused at least 10,000 deaths between 1999 and 2016 more than hurricanes, tornadoes or floods in most years.
Scientists link the warming planet to a rise in dangerous heat in the US, as well as the spread of infectious diseases and other health conditions. Federal research predicts heatstroke and similar illnesses will claim tens of thousands of American lives each year by the end of the century. Already, higher temperatures pose lethal risks: the five warmest years nationwide have all occurred since 2006. In the last six decades, the number of annual heatwaves in 50 US cities has, on average, tripled. In contrast to a viral pandemic, this is a quiet, insidious threat with no end point.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is charged with helping cities and states adapt to threats like extreme heat. Its climate program, created more than 10 years ago, is the federal governments only sustained effort to bolster state and local health departments fight against global warming. But the program has been hampered by a decade of underfunding, limited expertise and political resistance, Columbia Journalism Investigations and the Center for Public Integrity found.
Interviews with more than 100 people and a review of hundreds of pages of government records show the Obama administration, while pushing measures to combat climate change, missed opportunities to expand the program. Under Donald Trump, officials have tried to eliminate it.
The tepid federal response has left state and local health workers ill-equipped to act, exposing communities to underappreciated threats that will only get worse.

Record spikes in new coronavirus cases, hospitalizations sweep parts of U.S.
Source: Reuters
JUNE 14, 2020 / 12:17 PM
(Reuters) - New coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in record numbers swept through more U.S. states, including Florida and Texas, as most push ahead with reopening and President Donald Trump plans an indoor rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Alabama, Florida and South Carolina reported a record number of new cases for the third day in a row on Saturday, which many state health officials partly attribute to gatherings over the Memorial Day holiday weekend in late May.
Oklahoma reported record new cases for the second day in a row, and Alaska did so for the first time in weeks. Arizona and Nevada reported a near-record number of new cases.
In Louisiana, which had been one of the earlier virus hotspots, new cases were again on the rise with over 1,200 - the most there since May 21.
Nationally, there were over 25,000 new cases reported on Saturday, the highest tally for a Saturday since May 2, in part due to a significant increase in testing over the past six weeks.
